Running a successful business is not like a field of dreams; you can build it but they might not come. Marketing is all about leting people know about the product or service you offer, and persuading them to buy or use it. And for effective marketing you have to let people know about your product or service repeatedly.

To do this, you're going to have to come up with both a marketing strategy and a marketing plan.

What's the difference between a marketing strategy and a marketing plan?

The marketing strategy is shaped by your overall business goals. It includes a definition of your business, a description of your products or services, a profile of your target users or clients, and defines your company's role in relationship to the competition. The marketing strategy is essentially a document that you use to judge the appropriateness and effectiveness of your specific marketing plans. The CCH Business Owner's Guidebook has an excellent explanation and checklist that you can use to work through your marketing strategy.

To put it another way, your marketing strategy is a summary of your company's products and position in relation to the competition; your sales and marketing plans are the specific actions you're going to undertake to achieve the goals of your marketing strategy.

The marketing plan, then, can be thought of as the practical application of your marketing strategy. If you look at my article, "Writing The Marketing Plan", you'll see that the marketing plan includes details about your business' unique selling proposition, pricing strategy, the sales and distribution plan and your plans for advertising and promotions.

When you are writing a business plan, the Marketing and Sales Strategies section is an important part of your formal business plan. This part of writing a business plan essentially involves developing a marketing and sales strategy for your business.

What to Include in the Marketing & Sales Strategies Section

When you are writing a business plan, the Marketing and Sales Strategies section should include:

• How you will promote your business
• How you will get your product or service to your customers
• The costs to promote and distribute you products or services
• How you will measure the effectiveness of the methods you plan to use.

Writing a Marketing Plan

Once you've completed the Market Analysis section of your business plan, you'll know more about your customers, your competition and your company. That information should make writing the Sales and Marketing Strategy section of your business plan all the easier.

Depending on how detailed your marketing plan is, you may include the marketing plan in its entirety while you are writing this section of your business plan or you may just want to include highlights of your marketing plan.

If you are writing a business plan and only including highlights of your marketing plan, you'll want to make sure that the marketing plan is complete in case an investor requests the entire document. If your marketing plan is not overly long, you may also want to include it in the Appendix when you're writing your business plan.

While reading the Independent in noticed a really clever ad. It said “Book a room from £29 and get £25 off Virgin Wines.” Below in brackets it said “No we haven’t been on the Sherry. Book by 24th August.”

This is a combined ad from Virgin Wines and Travelodge and hotel chain, and works really well. If you like one of the products already you get to know the other product as well - if you go for the offer that is. Another thing they get right is to use humour with the Sherry part. Humour makes people like you, and if they like you there’s a better chance they’ll buy from you. Last but not least they use urgency with a deadline (”Book by 24th August”). The really important part is in the small print though, because the voucher you receive is only valid if you spend £64.99 or more. Clever, huh? Or maybe just sneaky, who knows. Another reason of the combined offer is to avoid people from ordering wine in bulk. You also have to pay for the hotel room after all. You task is now think how you can use this strategy in your business. Good luck.

Since I’m quite fascinated how effective viral internet marketing is I was pondering the other day how smart religion is using the same viral techniques. Think about it, religion has been around for millennia and keeps spawning new religions like Scientology. Why is that one might ask. The reason is simple, religion is very viral. It gets passed down from generation to generation. Parents teach their children about God, and these children will do the same to their children, and so on. When you are young its relatively easy to make you believe in religious concepts, especially if you are threaten with eternal hell if you don’t. So you have both the system in place to spread the believe plus a two-pronged motivation. Heaven if you believe, and hell if you don’t. If thats not a reason to believe in God then I don’t know what will. However some people seem to believe that the Internet and the easy access to information will have a negative impact on people believing in God unconditionally. I’ve been interested in Internet Marketing every since I’ve bought Michael Cheney’s Adsense Videos. Ever since I’ve been reading a lot about it. However after a year or so I can’t help but notice that the so-called gurus keep repeating themselves. They mostly teach basics or so it seems to me at least. For instance I bought Michael Cheney’s 11 Days To List Profits recently and was a bit disappointed that there wasn’t much new to me, considering that the price tag is higher than his other products. Don’t get me wrong, Michael’s stuff is great if you are new to this field but if you are an advanced learner I wouldn’t buy it.

Granted I’ve been doing Internet stuff full time for the last 10 years but I kind of miss an internet marketer who dares to teach more advanced techniques. I suspect that most gurus don’t do that because this would undermine their position. I guess its like with those Kung Fu masters who teach their students the basics but keep some advanced knowledge to themselves. Thus over generations more and more knowledge about Kung Fu got lost - at least thats what I’ve been told. The alternative is that there isn’t really any “secret stuff” out there, that Internet Marketing is basically very simple. My guess is that the truth is somewhere in-between. And as long as you can make good money with teaching basics not much will change. Another problem is that many gurus don’t really have a sound technical background and thus don’t have a choice. In fact some gurus even boast that they’ve been failures before they’ve made it big in Internet Marketing, and thus basically saying if I can do it so can you. So I’m wondering if anybody can recommend a marketer who specialices on advanced techniques. I’m seriously considering to buy stuff from Randy Baustert who is a real programmer like me and who is doing now IM. He has also been very helpful to me in his forums and made a logo for me. Anyway thats just my 2 cents, let me know your thoughts in the comment section.

It never occurred to me that this had anything to do with the internet. When it finally did dawn on me that this was a promotional technique, I didn’t have a clue as to how powerful it could be.

I began my relationship with this odd sounding technique by installing greeting cards on my site. I know it sounds small, but greeting cards are actually one of the most powerful techniques of all. Why? Because everyone seems to want to send ecards to their friends, lovers and relatives. Each card contains a link back to your site, which tends to produce visitors.

My next exposure was something called “tell a friend”. This is a simple script, installed in less than an hour, which allows your visitors to, well, tell their friends about your site. This is an excellent way to get people to visit, as virtually everyone will do something that their friends recommend. I’ve found this does not produce an incredible amount of traffic, but considering only an hour was put into installation, it’s not bad.

Another viral marketing technique which I’ve tried is creating an email service. I signed up a couple of domains with BigMailBox.Com, which allows me to give away web-based mailboxes. For example, I own the domain renaissancefaire.Org. I could link this to BigMailBox.Com, and allow people to send messages to theirname@r... Since every single email that is send from this mailbox contains a link back to my site, it tends to produce some traffic.

Another common viral marketing technique is electronic books. In fact, this is now the big rage. Just create an ebook and give it away! Everyone will want to download it, pass it on to their friends and add it to their own websites for others to download. The truth is that a good ebook, like anything else, will indeed do exactly that. And, of course, a bad ebook will sit there and rot.

Another great viral marketing technique (but one I have not personally tried out myself) is creating a freeware program and giving it away on your web site. Of course links to your website are scattered throughout the program. This tends to produce quite a few visitors, assuming the program is any good.

The same kind of thing can be done with free CGI scripts. You offer the script without warranty on your site, freely given to anyone who wants it. Allow them to post it on their site for free download also. Before long, you could find yourself getting a steady stream of visitors looking for those scripts.

Another excellent viral marketing technique is to write articles and post them on the web, allowing other sites and ezines to post them as well. A small word of caution here: I know from experience this can produce phenomenal amounts of traffic very quickly so be prepared.

I’m sure you can think of dozens or even hundreds of other ways to get in on this bandwagon. I’ll tell you one thing that I’ve learned - the search engines are worthless in comparison to link exchanges and viral marketing. Also, I’ve found these techniques are much more fun and much less prone to the whims of some search engine company.
